I'm Jérôme, I run Madakitecamp at Sakalava Bay, Diego Suarez. I've been an IKO certified instructor since 2010 and have trained over 1,000 riders on this spot. The budget question comes up in almost every conversation I have with future guests, and most answers you'll find online are too vague to be useful: ranges like "500 to 3000 euros" that don't tell you anything concrete.
So here's a real, category-by-category budget based on our 2026 rates and current flight prices. The final amount mostly depends on one thing: your profile. A beginner coming to learn, an independent rider renting gear on-site, and an independent rider bringing their own equipment don't have anywhere near the same budget.
Calculation base: a 7-night stay (8 days on-site), sea-view bungalow, Paris-Antananarivo flight followed by the Tana-Diego Suarez domestic flight.
This is our most common profile. You've never kited before, or you have a few hours of experience, and you want to use a 7-day stay to learn properly, with gear provided during lessons (helmet, vest, wetsuit, booties) and an internationally recognized IKO certification, awarded free of charge at the end of the course.
Total: around 2,290€
You already know how to ride, you don't want to fly with your kite gear, and you'd rather rent locally for the length of your stay. You qualify for the same weekly package (full board plus a full week of gear rental), which unlocks -10% on the bungalow and -10% on the rental.
Total: around 2,150€
You have your own kite, board, and wetsuit. You're not taking lessons or renting, so you don't qualify for the weekly package (which requires either a 10-hour private lesson package or a full week of rental). Here you'd go with half board instead of full board, better suited if you sometimes want to eat in town.
Total: around 1,745€
Budget extra if you're flying with your own gear: boardbag fees, around 20€ with Tsaradia on the domestic flight if the weight falls outside your baggage allowance.
Profile 1, learning: flights and transfer 1,170€, accommodation 378€, full board 245€, 10-hour lesson package 495€. Total around 2,290€.
Profile 2, renting gear: flights and transfer 1,170€, accommodation 378€, full board 245€, weekly gear rental 360€. Total around 2,150€.
Profile 3, own gear: flights and transfer 1,170€, accommodation 420€, half board 154€, no lessons or rental. Total around 1,745€, plus possible boardbag fees.
These three budgets are calculated over 7 nights. If you can stay longer, the accommodation discount increases: -15% for a 2 to 3 week stay, -20% for a 4-week stay. Lesson and rental rates can also be adjusted based on the length of stay and group size. In practical terms, the longer the stay, the lower your average daily cost, which makes it worth considering seriously if your schedule allows it.
The 900€ figure for a round-trip Paris-Antananarivo flight is a rate obtained by booking well in advance, ideally 6 to 12 months before departure, outside French school holiday periods. The closer you buy your ticket to the departure date, the higher the price climbs, and the gaps can be significant on this route where flight supply remains limited. If your dates are flexible, avoiding French school holidays (Easter, summer, and the Toussaint break) makes a real difference to the final price.
