How Long Does It Take to Learn Kitesurfing in Diego Suarez? The Complete Beginner's Guide

This article is written by the founder of Madakitecamp, an IKO-certified kitesurf instructor since 2010 at Sakalava Bay, Diego Suarez. The figures and observations below come directly from the center's own experience, not general information found elsewhere.

How long does it take to become independent in kitesurfing?

On average, it takes between ten and twenty hours of lessons to become fully independent in kitesurfing, meaning riding upwind without assistance. This duration mostly depends on the rider's profile.

An athletic profile, especially with prior experience in board sports like wakeboarding, surfing, snowboarding, or paragliding (sports that already build a sense of wind management), typically progresses in ten to fifteen hours. A non-athletic profile aged forty and above usually needs fifteen to twenty hours. There have even been cases, for young athletic riders with a strong board-sport background, of students riding their first runs and going upwind in just six hours, an exceptional case but one that shows the range of possible progression.

Among students who complete a fifteen-hour course, 90% leave fully independent.

When do you ride your first runs?

The first waterstarts and runs are usually achieved by the end of the second lesson or during the third lesson, with each lesson lasting two hours. Before that stage, learning focuses on piloting the kite in waist-deep water, safety, and mastering the fundamentals before moving on to the board.

Is kitesurfing a physical sport?

No, kitesurfing is above all a technical sport, not a sport of brute strength. Contrary to a very common misconception, piloting the kite is a fine, precise motion, not a display of raw power. It's the rider's body weight that holds the kite's pull, and the bar is only used to steer with precision. With the right balance, a student doesn't need any particular physical condition to progress.

This reality opens up two ways to ride once you're independent: leisure mode, cruising in relaxed freeride for hours, or a more committed and physically demanding mode, with freestyle, jumps, or wave riding for those chasing more thrills.

Why is Sakalava Bay an ideal spot to learn?

Sakalava Bay combines several rare conditions that clearly speed up a beginner's progression compared to learning at another spot or in open water. Beginner lessons are given at low tide, over a sand and seagrass bottom with no rocks or stonefish, in waist-deep water. This setup allows full control and maximum safety, whereas learning in open water or in a lagoon dotted with coral heads, where the beginner has no control over the kite, typically takes twice as long.

The wind here blows side-shore (south-east), meaning a student is always carried back toward the beach, with no risk of being pushed out to sea. Combined with a wide, open beach, this setup makes accidents very rare at Sakalava.

What gear is used for beginners?

Beginners typically use kites between eight and twelve square meters, an ideal size for stable, progressive piloting. During peak wind season, piloting lessons are often given with five to seven square meter kites, or even four square meters in the strongest conditions, always adapted to that day's weather.

When the wind exceeds 35 knots, it's generally not recommended to attempt a waterstart or ride your first runs. The risk of accidents rises sharply in conditions like that.

As for wind conditions, the optimal window for learning is between fifteen and twenty knots. Between twenty and thirty knots, learning is a bit more technical but still fully accessible. Beyond thirty knots, learning requires more technical skill, but remains possible thanks to the team's experience, which has coached beginners through the heart of the southern winter for years.

What slows down a beginner's progression the most?

What slows a student down the most isn't physical condition, it's lack of confidence and apprehension. As the level of commitment needs to increase, particularly when it's time to ride the first runs, apprehension clearly holds back progress. That's why being surrounded by a team you trust matters as much as technique itself: confidence is what allows you to let go of that apprehension.

In practice, every student is equipped with a walkie-talkie connected to their instructor throughout the course. From the first runs onward, they receive live advice and instructions through their headset, which is deeply reassuring and speeds up learning.

Is there a minimum age or physical requirement?

The minimum age to start kitesurfing is ten years old. There's no particular physical condition required, even people carrying extra weight become independent in kitesurfing. What actually matters is flexibility rather than weight: at one point in the learning process, you need to bring the board to your feet while already moving, a motion that calls for flexibility more than strength.

What's included in a course at Madakitecamp?

Lessons last two or three hours, with the option to combine up to four hours a day across two sessions, depending on tide and instructor availability. Madakitecamp is an IKO-affiliated center, with several IKO-certified instructors. IKO certification is issued free of charge at the end of the course, a genuine mark of seriousness and international recognition to validate your level.
