Kitesurfing or Wingfoiling in Madagascar: Which Sport to Choose?

This article is written by the founder of Madakitecamp, an IKO-certified kitesurf instructor based at Sakalava Bay, Diego Suarez, since 2012. We offer kitesurfing, wingfoiling, and windsurfing on-site, with wingfoil now part of our offering for three years. Here's what you need to choose between the two sports with confidence.

What's the difference between wingfoiling and kitesurfing?

The main difference lies in the wing and its distance from the rider. In kitesurfing, the kite flies several meters above the water, steered remotely through a bar connected by lines. In wingfoiling, the inflatable wing is held directly in the hands, with no lines, and the rider stands on a board fitted with a foil beneath the water rather than a traditional board. Two very different feelings: the kite delivers more power and pull, the wing offers more freedom of movement and a smooth, silent glide carried by the foil.

Which one is easier to learn?

Learning time is broadly similar between the two sports, following the same benchmarks as kitesurfing: expect between 10 and 20 hours to become independent depending on your profile (see our [guide on learning to kitesurf]). The real exception applies to riders who already practice kitefoiling: for them, the transition to wingfoiling is very fast, often just 2 to 4 hours, since foil control under the board is already mastered and all that's left is learning to steer the wing by hand.

Does wingfoiling work as well as kiting at Sakalava Bay?

Yes, but with one thing to know: the foil needs more water depth than classic kitesurfing, so wingfoiling requires waiting for mid to high tide. That still leaves a comfortable window of 4 to 6 hours a day, plenty for a session or a lesson. The wind itself is the same across the whole zone, the Varatraza blows just as reliably for kiters as for wingfoilers.

What gear is used for wingfoiling at Madakitecamp?

We equip our students and renters with Ozone wings from 2 to 6 m², and Gong foils with masts from 45 to 75 cm depending on level and conditions. As with kitesurfing, the gear is matched to that day's wind and to the rider's level.

Is there a price difference between kite and wing?

No, lesson rates are identical between kitesurfing and wingfoiling at Madakitecamp. So the choice comes down purely to your riding preferences, not your budget.

So, kitesurfing or wingfoiling, which should you choose?

Neither sport is objectively better than the other, it comes down to what you're after. Kitesurfing offers more power, more speed, and greater potential for tricks (jumps, freestyle). Wingfoiling appeals through its simpler gear (no lines to manage), its ability to ride in lighter wind thanks to the foil, and a smoother, quieter glide. If you're still on the fence once you're here, you can absolutely try both during your stay, with the same level of coaching and the same rate.
